Types of Current

Electric Circuits

Current flows from a battery (power source) to an electric component. The component converts the electric energy into another type of energy. A light bulb is a component that converts electrical energy into light and heat energy.

Electric Current

The rate of flow of electric charge is called an electric current.

In SI, the unit of electric current is ampere. The smaller unit of current is milliampere and microampere.

Measuring Electric Current

Electric current is measured by using an instrument called ammeter. An ammeter is put in series in the circuit.

Measuring Electric Current

Direct Current (d.c.)

The flow of current in one direction only is called direct current.

It is provided by cells and batteries.

Conventional Current

The current due to positive charges, which flows from positive terminal of the battery to its negative terminal, is called conventional current.
