Velocity - Time Graph

Velocity - Time Graph

A speed–time graph has the same idea as given in the distance–time graph but different quantities are plotted on the y-axis.

Slope of Velocity-time Graph

The slope of speed-time graph is known as acceleration.

It could be positive or negative. In case of a uniform acceleration, the slope is shown by a straight line.

The slope of the graph is also known as gradient of the graph.

  1. In the following graphs, the acceleration is constant in the first graph because gradient is straight line.
  2. In the second graph, acceleration is zero because there is no change in velocity (gradient is zero).
  3. In the third graph, acceleration is negative because the gradient is in opposite direction.

Gradient of the Graph

Gradient of the Graph

In the following situation, as the light of the traffic signal 1 turns green, the car is accelerating constantly from A to B. From B to C, it is moving with constant velocity. From C to D the driver applies the brakes and car decelerates constantly and stops at signal 2.
