Slope of Velocity-time Graph
The slope of speed-time graph is known as acceleration.
It could be positive or negative. In case of a uniform acceleration, the slope is shown by a straight line.
The slope of the graph is also known as gradient of the graph.
- In the following graphs, the acceleration is constant in the first graph because gradient is straight line.
- In the second graph, acceleration is zero because there is no change in velocity (gradient is zero).
- In the third graph, acceleration is negative because the gradient is in opposite direction.
In the following situation, as the light of the traffic signal 1 turns green, the car is accelerating constantly from A to B. From B to C, it is moving with constant velocity. From C to D the driver applies the brakes and car decelerates constantly and stops at signal 2.
