Types of Thermometers

The instrument which is used to measure the temperature is known as thermometer.

Thermometer is used to measure the degree of hotness or coldness of a body.

Liquid – in – Glass Thermometers

Some thermometers contain alcohol or mercury in the bulb to measure the temperature.

When the temperature rises, the mercury or alcohol expands and pushes the thread of the liquid along the scale of the thermometer.

Clinical Thermometer

A clinical thermometer is used to measure the temperature of human body.

The range of clinical thermometer is from 35°C to 43°C.

Laboratory Thermometer

Laboratory thermometer is used in the science laboratory.

The range of this thermometer is from 10oC to 110oC.

Mercury Thermometer

Naturally, mercury is silver in colour. It is suitable for everyday use and can be used for the clinical purpose.

Mercury is poisonous, so it is not a safe liquid.

Alcohol Thermometer

Colour is added to the alcohol to make an alcohol thermometer.

The freezing point of alcohol is -112°C which is suitable for low arctic temperatures.
